FAQ

What’s included in classes and Open Play?

We make it easy for you to show up and enjoy Mahjong—no prep required. Every class and Open Play session includes:

  • Use of Mahjong tiles
  • Loaner National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) cards
  • Scorecards and all teaching materials
  • Complimentary tea, drinks, and snacks
  • A warm, supportive space to learn and play

What kind of snacks and drinks do you provide?

We think good snacks and great drinks make Mahjong even more enjoyable. Every class and Open Play session includes access to our self-serve refreshment station, featuring:

  • Tea Bar – A rotating selection of herbal, green, and black teas
  • Signature Mocktails – Thoughtfully crafted, always alcohol-free, and always available
  • Other Drinks – Sparkling water, still water, and seasonal sips
  • Snacks – Light bites like cookies, popcorn, and other rotating treats

Everything is help-yourself and included with your session—just one more way we keep things relaxed, fun, and a little bit fancy.

What should I bring?

Just bring yourself! We provide everything you need, including:

  • Mahjong sets
  • Loaner NMJL cards
  • All learning materials

If you already have your own card or tiles, feel free to bring them—but there’s no need to purchase anything in advance.

How many classes do I need?

For the best learning experience, we recommend investing in your first few months with a mix of structured learning and supported practice:

  • Mahjong 101 – a gentle intro for absolute beginners
  • Mahjong 102 – builds on the basics and gets you playing full hands
  • Open Play – relaxed weekly sessions to practice with guidance on hand

Everyone learns at a different pace, and you're welcome to repeat any class or join Open Play as often as you'd like. Our team is always available to help answer beginner questions and support your growth.

What’s the difference between Mahjong 101, 102, and Open Play?

  • Mahjong 101: Learn the tiles, basic rules, and how to start a hand
  • Mahjong 102: Get deeper into strategy, scoring, and faster play
  • Open Play: Practice and play at your own pace—with support if you need it

What’s your cancellation or reschedule policy?

Lily Pad Mahjong Booking Policy

Our classes are small and carefully planned — your seat matters.

  • Reschedule requests must be made at least 72 hours in advance.
  • We cannot accommodate same-day changes, short-notice reschedules, or no-shows.
  • All tickets are final sale: non-refundable and non-transferable.

We appreciate your understanding — this policy keeps our events running smoothly and ensures a great experience for everyone at the table.

I’ve never played before. Will I be totally lost?

Not at all. Mahjong 101 is made just for beginners. We guide you step-by-step, explain everything clearly, and keep it low-pressure. You’ll be playing real hands by the end of your first session.

Do I need to take 101 before Open Play?

We recommend completing Mahjong 101 (and ideally 102) before joining Open Play—unless you already know the basics of NMJL-style play. Open Play is relaxed and supportive, but it’s more fun when you have the fundamentals down.

Do you offer private classes or group events?

Yes. We love hosting private sessions for birthdays, work events, friend groups, and more. Check out our Private Events page to learn more about pricing and availability. We don't offer classes smaller than 8 for Mahjong 101.

Where can I get an official NMJL card?

We provide loaner NMJL cards at every session, but we encourage players to order their own for practice and long-term use. You can purchase one directly from the National Mah Jongg League at: https://www.nationalmahjonggleague.org

Can I practice at home?

Yes. We recommend I Love Mahj for online practice. It’s a great way to reinforce what you’ve learned between classes.
